Belgian Malinois

Belgian Malinois

This smart and serious dog makes a great watchdog. It can be wary toward other dogs and is protective of its home and family.

Breed Overview

Originating in Belgium, this breed's early history began as general-purpose shepherds and guard dogs. They were brought into US in early 1900s. These alert and protective pets make ideal watch dogs and are one of the most preeminent police dogs in the world. The Malinois has high energy, and is also very smart, obedient, and hard working. They are best suited with families, especially active types or living with big yards. They require vigorous daily exercise such as a good jog or play, as well as mental challenges. These dogs enjoy herding and will occasionally herd the family and guests. Their coat requires weekly brushing, but more frequent brushing during shedding times.
