Elbow Dysplasia

Description: An inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. Stiffness in your dog's elbows may become a problem for her, especially as she matures.

What to Watch For: You may notice that she begins to show lameness or reluctance to run or play.

Diagnosis: Your veterinary team can treat the arthritis—the sooner the better—to minimize discomfort and pain. Your vet will take x-rays of your dog’s bones to identify issues as early as possible.

Treatment: Surgery is sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. Keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering!
